Mount Gambier to Adelaide

Not a lot to report today.

We woke up to a rainy day in Mount Gambier. We both passed out quickly the night before and slept well. The hotel was a little older, but was nice. The staff was very friendly and I thanked them again for waiting up for us.

We decided to have breakfast at the hotel before we checked out. Jacob had bacon and eggs and I had pancakes. During breakfast we spent some time talking about the highlights of our trip and being a little sad about it coming to an end soon. Not to mention we both have these fantastic tans and no one is going to be able to appreciate them because it will be freezing and snowing when we get home.

We checked out of the hotel around 10 a.m. and drove over to see Blue Lake. This is a big, very blue crater lake. It was raining quite hard and rather windy so we snapped a few photos and moved on.

We next stopped at Woolworth’s and grabbed some snacks and drinks for the road. Then we filled up the car and left. Yesterday, we were lamenting about getting our hotel in Mount Gambier. It meant extra driving yesterday. But we realized today, had we not stayed in Mount Gambier, we wouldn’t have seen all the kangaroos along the road last night.

It was a long 4.5 hours to Adelaide. We did see one more kangaroo just as we were leaving Mount Gambier but we didn’t see any others the rest of the way. It was miles and miles of rainy farmland.

As we got closer to Adelaide we kept getting warnings about a steep descent coming up with multiple emergency pull-outs for trucks. Jacob said if it wasn’t an impressive hill he would be disappointed. The descent reminded us of driving down one of the mountain passes back home. We made it without problems.

Getting to our hotel was a little interesting because we decided to stay in the very center of town. However, Jacob did a great job. When we arrived he pulled over near the entrance and I ran in.

This hotel is brand new and very nice. However, it’s an adjustment moving to this little of space after having an apartment for almost a week.

We had dinner at the hotel. And I got my first glass of wine. I’ve been too sick to enjoy any. Australia and this region specifically is known for wine so I was excited to enjoy a glass, for $5 Australian no less!

After that we decided to walk around Adelaide for a little bit. We walked down the main shopping promenade to a park. We were going to walk through the botanic gardens but they were closed. During our walk we saw these colorful birds.

On our walk back we walked through the Adelaide Arcade which was originally built in the 1880s.

There was a really interesting mix of old and new all through the streets. I snapped a couple examples.

We are back at the hotel now resting and watching a cricket match on tv. Tomorrow we are off to Mount Lofty to do some exploring. It is supposed to be a beautiful and warm day. Hopefully we will see more extraordinary wildlife!

Until then!
