Bears in Bern

We have arrived in Munich, Germany. We are officially approaching the end of our vacation. It has been an incredible three weeks. Thank you to all our cat sitters and thank you to my parents who are spending this final week with Oscar.

Today we woke up in Grindelwald, Switzerland and packed our things. We had breakfast and checked the apartment several times to make sure we hadn’t left anything behind. We were out and on the road by 9:30 a.m. We were sad to be leaving Grindelwald. There is so much to see and do in this area and even though we had many full days, we could have had many more!

We spent part of our drive talking about the places we have visited and the different places we stayed during this trip. We enjoyed our many hikes and we felt like all the apartments or hotels we stayed at were in great locations.

It took us about an hour and a half to arrive in Bern. On our drive to Bern, we passed the Thunersee. This made us think about the time we had stayed in Thun in 2016. Our hotel was in a small town square and had a view of a castle. There are so many more things we want to see and do but the cost and time commitment make it hard!

I told Jacob that we can just quit our jobs and I’ll commit myself to being a travel blog writer full-time. He didn’t seem convinced.

Bern is a beautiful city in Switzerland. We had been by here before but didn’t make it to see the city so we wanted to stop by. Bern is also known for having bears. According to the Bern Bear Park website: Since 1513 bears have been at home in Bern; until 1857 in the town itself, then in the bear pit, and since 2009 in the new and spacious bear park.

Before the bears, we parked our car and walked around the city. Bern has many beautiful sights and rich history dating back to the 12th century.

As we were walking along, I spotted a Coop and wanted to pop inside to pick up a soda. What I didn’t realize is this place was designed for grab and go style lunches. They had a variety of sandwiches, salads and breads. We both picked out a sandwich and a soda. I also grabbed a little bear cookie for later. We enjoyed our lunch and then were on our way.

We only had a few hours of paid parking using the last few coins we had.

We walked by the Bern Cathedral, the parliament building, the Muensterplattform park and the old city clock tower. It was a beautiful and hot day.

We eventually worked our way back to where we started so we could see the bears before we left the city. Please enjoy these bear photos taken by Jacob. I think he might have a calling as a wildlife photographer.

We watched the bear and then walked with it as it walked through its enclosure. Then we took the stairs back up to the road and followed a path that led us right out to where we had parked. I didn’t realize Jacob had found such a good spot, he must have known what he was doing!

From there we were back in the car for the four hour drive to Munich. It was a mostly uneventful drive. We drove through Switzerland, to Austria and then to Germany. There was a lot of construction which slowed us down in places but Jacob was able to cruise along on the Autobahn for a bit. We made good time getting to Munich and arrived just after 5 p.m. There is a parking garage in our hotel so we parked the car there and will be returning it tomorrow morning.

We will be spending the day walking around Munich. It is supposed to be in the 90s, so we will end our trip in the same sweltering heat that we started it in. Tomorrow is our last full day in Europe!

Until then!
