Bled Island

Today we ventured to Bled Island. This is the island in the middle of Lake Bled and is the only island in all of Slovenia. The main attraction other than the island itself is the church and clock tower. According to the Bled website, before the church was built on the island, a temple dedicated to the pagan goddess of life and fertility stood at the same place. After Christianization in 745, the ancient Slavic temple was replaced by a church, dedicated to the birth of Mary. The church was renovated in 1465 and rebuilt in Gothic style.

We took the electric motorized boat to the island instead of the scenic wooden plentas which take much longer. On our boat there were three children and the boat driver kept letting the kids “steer” the boat. It was pretty cute. One of the kids, a toddler started jerky the wheel back and forth wildly and the driver had to take over again. We made it to the island in once piece and walked up to the top to find the church and clock tower. The island also features a shop and cafe.

We walked all around the island which is actually quite small. People all over were swimming in the water. There were people in private rented boats cruising around. The water along the island was so clear we could see fish and the rocks at the bottom.

Above are the 99 steps that lead up to the church.

After we walked all over we bought two tickets to go inside the church and to walk up the clock tower. My legs are still fatigued from yesterday’s adventures but we couldn’t miss out on the clock tower!

After that it was about time to catch our boat back to Bled.

We thoroughly enjoyed our little trip to the island. Once back to town, we stopped by the store and picked up sandwiches for lunch along with some food for breakfast in the morning. We then returned to the apartment for a break from the sun and heat before venturing back out.

We decided to walk along the lake where we hadn’t been before because we missed that part when we hiked up to the castle. We also walked over to the old part of Bled to see the old buildings. The highlight of the journey was a Flix Bus honking their horn at a car illegally parked because a woman was changing her child’s diaper in the driver seat of her car. Other than that, the walk was uneventful.

We returned to the apartment, again to get out of the heat. We are Pacific Northwesterner babies and not used to heat like this.

After a break, I walked over to a local restaurant and ordered two burgers for takeaway. The host was very kind and helpful. Then I walked back to the apartment. My calves are so fatigued and ready for a break from hills. Every time we venture out, we have to climb a hill back to our apartment then walk up three flights of stairs. Our views are nice up here, but that also means we are pretty warm. Luckily, we’ve been able to cool it enough at night to sleep.

Tomorrow we have to clean up the apartment, pack our things and load up the car. We have both really enjoyed our stay in Bled and would recommend it to anyone! We check out at 10 a.m. then have a few scenic places to stop along the way to our next destination, Ljubljana. This is the capital of Slovenia. We are only there for one night before heading to Venice.

Until then!
