The Motherland

When I look back at the pictures I have taken from the day I understand why I am so tired by the evening.

We started our morning in Bremen. I had a good nights rest and was ready to go bright and early. We headed out behind out hotel to take in the sights that we had glossed over the night before and a green mermaid caught my eye.

I skipped over to Starbucks to pick up some coffee and a pastry for both of us that we could enjoy while we walked around the old part of Bremen. We checked out the Martinikirche across the street from our hotel and then the Bremer Marktplatz which included Bremen Roland, Bremen Townhall (a 600-year old building) and St. Petri Dom Bremen.

We strolled back to the hotel to check out and pack up the car but decided to do more exploring and take a walk along the Weser River. Before heading out town we walked through Schnoor Bremen which is a neighborhood in the medieval center of the city. It was like walking back through time, all these tiny little alley ways. So beautiful! I absolutely recommend a visit here if you’re ever in Bremen. However, the best part by far was seeing the Katze Cafe (katze is cat). Unfortunately, the Katze Cafe didn’t open until noon and we had to be on our way but I still got a photo with it.

After that we were headed to Bremerhaven. My mother was born in Bremerhaven and my grandfather grew up there. Since this city was basically destroyed during World War II it looks nothing like it did when my grandfather lived there but it was still cool to be there.

We decided to grab some lunch here before heading out and I ran into some troubles ordering our food. Jacob ended up with some sort of meat sandwich. He said it tasted good so I guess that was mission accomplished. I ended up ordering some stir-fry from a woman who impressively speaks German, English and Turkish. #lifegoals

Since we hadn’t done enough already we decided to head to Amsterdam. Since there are  no good highways from east to west in this part of Germany we had to drive through some delightful farm towns. Well, I thought they were delightful. I saw cows and horses and rolling meadows. Jacob on the other hand was forced to pass multiple pieces of farm machinery on the road going a snails pace and swearing each time.

Once we were through the German countryside we detoured to take the Afsluitdijk which crosses the north sea. It was pretty darn cool. We would have enjoyed the sights more but by this point were starting to feel pooped.

I have to say once we crossed into the Netherlands I started seeing less cows and more sheep. Fields and fields of sheep. They were so darn cute. Definitely a highlight of our journey. It is also amazing that even though the Netherlands is incredible dense they still have miles and miles of beautiful green farmland.

We decided to pick the hotel we did because it was right off the highway and close to the train. I also opted to add breakfast and parking to our booking to make it a bit easier for us. The hotel was easy enough to find and I was greeted by a concierge who spoke perfect English. I made sure all the details of our reservation were correct.

Anyway, we parked our car and headed into the hotel. We had a room on the the eleventh floor which was the top, so we were already excited for the views but when we opened up the room, hello! So nice. King bed, big bathroom with heated floors and a soaking tub. Fantastic views of the city.

That settled it, we ordered room service and kicked up our feet. Amsterdam we will see more of you in the morning!

Tomorrow – see the sights of Amsterdam then head back to Germany to stay the night in Cologne.

Gute nacht.
