Zugspitze

We have come full circle and are back in Munich.

The garden at the AirBnB

We started our morning in Innsbruck. Our AirBnB was amazing. It was a house with an apartment attached. Next to the house is a babbling brook and the apartment looks out onto a beautiful garden with chickens! It was heavenly. I wish we had been able to stay there longer. It was also nice to not be in a big apartment building. It was so quiet. I slept well.

Also, they had two cats.

Since the next few days we are in Munich we just have small day trips planned. A few things on our list are seeing some of the famous castles, including Neuschwanstein and going to Zugspitze. Unfortunately, the weather is taking a turn for the worse and getting quite cold and cloudy. Today looked like our best day for Zugspitze and since we could only reserve tickets for the Neuschwanstein castle, two days in advance, we decided to move that to Friday.

After cleaning up after ourselves, we were on the road to Zugspitze, only a short hour drive away.

We were hoping the longer we waited the nicer the weather would get so we decided to walk around Garmisch Partenkirchen. This was a cute little town had many of their buildings painted beautifully. Unfortunately, it was really, really cold and the wind made it even colder. But we still enjoyed walking around.

We decided we had waited long enough and headed to the Zugspitze cable car, which was a good idea because by the time we got there the line was quite long. I couldn’t believe how many people were there on a cloudy Wednesday.

After over an hour wait for our 10 minute cable car we were on the way. This car goes from 998 meters (3274 feet) to 2,962 meters (9,717 feet).

I’m not sure why I agreed to this.

Oh yes, Jacob really wanted to go. I guess that’s love! Us on the cable car below… and a bit of the view.

It really was only 10 minutes and we were at the top. We were both relieved that we didn’t feel the effects of the altitude as much as we did at Jungfraujoch. We were able to walk around and feel fine. Climbing stairs was even ok.

We walked all over the place but unfortunately the clouds took over most of the views we would have had. One cool part of this summit is that you can walk from Germany to Austria. The mountain is the border, so we took a stroll over to the Austria side which seemed much less crowded.

A few clouds rolled over the mountain as we were there, which was pretty cool but apparently it was way too cold for me to pull my cell phone out for any photos. (Camera cord still broken…)

After we had experienced the summit enough we decided to grab some lunch in a restaurant there. I took a photo of our amazing lunch, but it didn’t save. Jacob had a hot chocolate and spaghetti. I had cheesy potato dumplings and some tea. It was very good!

After lunch it was about time to head out of there. We had about another hour wait for our 10-minute cable car. There is also the option of taking a train down, but you have to take a cable car there and then the train only runs once every hour, then it takes 45 minutes to get down. We decided waiting in line would still save us time overall.

The way down was even more crowded than the way up, but we made it! I shared a moment with a German or Austrian woman when I said, “We made it!” and she said, “Yes, we are still alive!”

Here’s a view from the parking lot. All this blue sky popped up but the clouds still hung on to the mountain.

After that it was a pretty quick drive to Munich. We arrived right around 5 p.m. and had to fight the commuters returning home for parking. We ended up about a kilometer away from our AirBnB but it’s a nice walk through a beautiful park.

We are right across the street from Katholisches Pfarramt St. Maximilian, a beautiful church with wouldn’t you guess, bells!

This seems like a really nice neighborhood and the the apartment is quiet so far. It is a studio but comfortably large.

Tomorrow we plan to see the sights of Munich that we didn’t see before. Friday we are off to the castles and Saturday no plans yet. Sunday we fly home!
